Search DeWitt Civil Dockets

Civil matters in DeWitt County start with one question: which court holds the file? A DeWitt County civil court docket covers filings, motions, settings, and rulings in lawsuits, not criminal charges. The case could sit in a district court, the constitutional County Court, a probate proceeding, or a Justice Court. Each level keeps its own records, and each clerk runs its own search path. An online index can confirm a case exists. A calendar can show a setting. For the petition, an order, an exhibit, or a certified judgment, though, you still need the clerk who keeps the underlying civil file.

DeWitt Civil Docket Rotation

DeWitt local rules assign district civil cases at random. The choices are the 24th, 135th, and 267th District Courts. The case stays on that docket for all purposes once it lands there. So do not assume one district court from the subject of the suit. Start at the shared District Clerk record office. Follow the assignment shown in the case.

There is a geographic wrinkle. The district judges' chambers are listed in Victoria. The DeWitt District Clerk counter sits in Cuero. That split does not move the DeWitt County civil docket out of the county file. A judge with geographic jurisdiction may hear a pending matter in the regional structure. Confirm the judge, court, and setting from the case notice or the clerk. Skip the chambers address as a filing clue.

What a Civil Docket Shows

A DeWitt County civil docket may show the case identity, parties, filed events, court assignment, hearings, and disposition data. The exact public fields depend on your source. You might be viewing the District Clerk calendar. Or it could be re:SearchTX or a County Clerk LGS index. There is no single universal civil-number pattern here. Use the actual cause number as printed instead of inventing a format.

Cause numberThe clerk’s identifier used to locate the civil file.
PartiesThe case caption or indexed names, subject to redaction and access rules.
FilingsEvents for petitions, answers, motions, or other submitted records when the system exposes them.
AssignmentThe district court or lower court that holds the matter.
SettingThe date and type of hearing, docket call, pretrial event, or trial.
DispositionA judgment, order, dismissal, or other final event when entered and publicly available.

An event title alone does not disclose the full text of a filing. When the wording matters, order the document.

DeWitt Civil Calendar Tools

The District Clerk calendar offers a Civil category with Day, Week, Month, and Agenda views. It can print the current view as a PDF and expose iCal or RSS links. The annual district schedule shows a broader pattern of jury, non-jury, and other setting days. Each source can change. A saved feed or PDF may go stale.

Treat calendar data as a way to narrow a DeWitt County civil docket search. Then compare it with the case record. The District Clerk page carried a July 2026 notice. A site redesign had halted posting of new office and docket information. When the web calendar and a filed notice disagree, call 361-275-0931 or email dewitt-county-district-clerk@dwcotx.org.

Note: Calendar exports are convenient snapshots. Only the court and clerk can confirm a current DeWitt County civil setting.

Types of Civil Cases

The kind of DeWitt County civil case determines who keeps the file. The District Clerk holds district civil and family files. The County Clerk holds county-level civil, probate, and guardianship records. Evictions and other justice-level matters go to the Justice Courts. So do debt claims and small claims. Assignment also turns on jurisdiction and the relief sought. The filed notice is a better guide than a broad label.

  • District civil suits and related motions
  • Family matters maintained by the District Clerk
  • County civil proceedings maintained by the County Clerk
  • Probate and guardianship matters in County Court records
  • Debt, small-claim, and eviction matters in the correct Justice Court

County Clerk LGS access may show only the index for civil or probate material because of confidential information. An index limit does not mean the clerk lacks the filed record.

DeWitt Justice Civil Dockets

Justice Court matters never become district cases just because they are civil. DeWitt JP offices publish forms for debt claims, small claims, evictions, SCRA affidavits, last-known-address certificates, relief petitions, and indigence affidavits. The offices offer no countywide public JP docket viewer. Contact the precinct clerk directly.

Settings on Civil Dockets

DeWitt local rules allow non-jury settings in several ways. A party may use a request to the District Clerk, a letter, or a motion. Another suitable method also works. So does the court's own action. Jury settings may follow a party request, court action, or a docket-control conference. At docket call, the judge calls the case number and style. Counsel states readiness and gives a trial-time estimate. That helps set the order of trials.

A case not reached may carry over or be reset. Continued dismissal matters must be reset to the next available trial date. A reset needs a pretrial order with deadlines. Pretrial conferences are generally targeted for no later than ten days before trial unless the court orders otherwise. The local rules also give criminal cases priority over civil cases at district trial settings. So a listed civil date may move.

The full date workflow appears on the DeWitt County court calendar. Always confirm a reset or continuance from a current clerk source.

DeWitt Dismissal and Suspense

DeWitt County civil records carry two labels that trip people up. One is the Dismissal Docket. The other is the Suspense Docket. Cases that sit too long without a final order can land on the Dismissal Docket. The clerk then sends notice to every lawyer. Parties handling a case alone get notice too. Unless the court keeps the case under Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 165a, it can be dismissed.

A stayed, abated, or bankruptcy matter goes the other way, onto the Suspense Docket. Suspense simply pauses things. The court is waiting until it can move forward. That pause is not a ruling on the merits. It is not a dismissal either. When either label appears on a DeWitt County court docket, read the notice and check the next setting. Then ask the District Clerk which filed order actually controls the case.

DeWitt Civil Docket Access

Judicial records in DeWitt County flow through a different door than other government records. Eligible judicial records are open under Texas Rule of Judicial Administration 12. Court rules, statutes, and orders can carve out exceptions. The Texas Judiciary open-records policy makes one thing clear. The Texas Public Information Act, which covers executive records, does not work the same way here. So aim any request narrowly. Send it to the clerk who actually holds the record you want.

Public index, private detail: Family, probate, guardianship, juvenile, and sealed civil material can be redacted or restricted. Rule 76a-related orders and other law may govern sealed civil documents.

For civil and probate cases, the County Clerk's online access stops at the index. Confidential information keeps full documents off the screen. Ask the clerk's office whether it will issue a plain or certified copy, and whether you need an order, identification, or some other step first.

DeWitt Paperless Civil Files

Paperless civil files arrived in DeWitt County through the District Clerk, effective January 1, 2026. Anything e-filed becomes an original inside Enterprise Justice. Paper filings brought to the courthouse get scanned into that same system. Exhibits that cannot be scanned stay with the office instead. So a docket entry can show a filing. No public image may exist. A physical exhibit can still sit in the case file.

eFileTexas is only the submission channel. It is not a promise of full public access or certification. Missing an order or exhibit online? Give the District Clerk the cause number and the filing date. Name the exact item you need. Then ask for a plain, certified, or electronic copy and the current fee. DeWitt schedules list $1 per page for plain copies. Certification costs $5 per instrument. A $5 name search applies when no cause number is supplied.
